Michael Jordan on The Pursuit of Excellence

A Book Review by Angel M.

This is a great book.  Michael Jordan talks about the passion of the game of basketball and the dedication and hard work you have to go through to make it to the NBA.

In one part of the book, he says that you shouldn’t be afraid to take the big shot. If you miss it, oh well. If you make it, that’s great, but don’t put yourself down if you miss because you’ve got to deal with it and keep your head up.  Set small goals and don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

In another part of the book, he talks about how he did not make the varsity basketball team. After that, he made a small goal and decided that next time tryouts came, he was going to make the varsity team and start. He put in work the whole summer, working on his shot, dribbling and defense, and he never gave up until he became great. Then when tryouts came, he made the varsity basketball team and started.

Mike tells us that you have got to believe in yourself if you want to make it.  It’s okay to accept failure because everyone fails at something, but you shouldn’t accept not trying.

The Walking Dead: “Season One”

by Jillian Solar

“Season One” of The Walking Dead is the best.  The protagonist, Rick Grimes, wakes in a hospital in Atlanta, only to find a horrific world full of zombies.  He hits the streets, anxious to find his family, which leads to one word, hope. Rick never gives up on hope.  Hope is one theme that makes “Season One” of The Walking Dead different from other zombie stories.  The show can make you angry, sad, and happy. You feel what the characters are feeling. It is almost as if you are there. It is a TV show that is obviously worth watching.  If you don’t have time for the whole series, you should at least check out “Season One.”

Closed for the Season

A book review by Catty C.

Closed for the Season by Mary Downing Hahn is a chilling tale following 2 boys as they unravel the secrets to a unsolved murder in one of their homes. Over all, it is a great novel with a shocking plot twist that leaves readers on the edge and begging for more. If you want more of her, I recommend All the Lovely Bad Ones, another fantastic novel.
